mw3 v bf3
by Cuppa_Tea

The 3 phases of MW3 Multiplayer:

1. Cool – it’s just like Black Ops
2. Oh – it’s just like Black Ops
3. S**t – it’s just like Black Ops

And the Battlefield 3 lover in me wishes I could stop there, but there is a 4th phase and that is “it’s better than Black Ops and actually I really like it”.

All that in just 45 minutes of playing time – which was enough to promote me to Level 10.

I was immediately able to find a friend “Foxtrot” and teamed up in-game (not through a complicated and shaky browser plug-in).

MW3 multi-player is just like MW2, with a few tweaks to make it a little bit like the original Modern Warfare (but not enough).

The guns have a nice heavy feel to them which adds to the impression that the game is a little Arcade like. The gameplay is straightforward run and gun stuff. Can’t aim? Doesn’t matter, the hit boxes are huge – just aim in their general direction and hit fire – if you hit fire before they do you’ll get the kill.

The graphics are the same as we’ve seen before, quite nice but nowhere near the stunning display of Battlefield 3. DICE advanced the genre with BF3 – with a magnificent “next-gen” game-engine, having played BF3 it’s rather spoilt the surprise (or lack of) playing MW3. Infinity Ward has just turned out the same old thing.

There are plenty of little details MW3 could have had – but the opportunities were missed in the rush to release the game. For example one level see’s bodies hanging in the street, great I thought – if I shoot them they’ll swing back and forth, and hey if I shoot the rope they’ll drop to the ground right? Wrong, the bullets pass straight through and do nothing – they are after all just background scenery.

And therein lies the biggest gripe, the maps just aren’t interactive, no destructible scenery – if you shoot at someone hiding behind a wall you don’t shoot the wall away as you would in Battlefield 3. It’s an old school shooter in every way: game-play and game-engine.

Having played BF3 you may find MW3 frustrating in its limitations, but here’s the shocker – you may just find that actually, you enjoy playing MW3 more!

It’s dumbed down, it’s arcade like, it’s another installment of the same old game - BUT IT’S GOOD! Very good, its fast-paced frantic gameplay ensures there’s never a dull moment. No spawning and having to run for a whole minute to get back to the action because your teammate has buggered off with the Humvee (aka BF3). No in MW3 it’s nearly impossible to go 5 seconds without getting a kill or being killed.

The maps are small, but offer plenty of variety, London is nicely recreated complete with London Bus and Underground station, and there’s a beautifully rendered level set in a shopping arcade.

There are things you may be looking for in MW3 – such as custom classes, don’t worry, they get unlocked soon enough, it gently unveils more and more of itself to settle you in without overwhelming you – quite a nice touch.

In short Battlefield 3 delivers a next-gen game that advances the first-person shooter genre with jaw-dropping graphics, interactive environments and deep tactical team-play on massive maps. MW3 on the other hand combines the best of MW2 with the best of Black Ops and delivers an old fashioned dumbed down shooter for the masses, and it is terrific fun! Not as good a game as Battlefield3, not by a long shot – but you might just find you enjoy playing it more.

BF3 Beta Review
by Cuppa_Tea

Installing

This is a review aimed at gameplay, but here are a few IMPORTANT hints (I’ll let you Google the details):

1. Get the latest “non-certified” Graphics driver or you won’t be able to even run it! (http://www.geforce.com/News/articles/nvidia-geforce-r285-beta-driver-for-bf3-released)
2. Download and install through Origin seems pretty quick, but do Restart your PC before trying to play it.
3. If you’re getting a corrupted half-loaded web-page when you try to launch game from Origin (the Beta’s launch mechanism is web-based) and it says "Your browser is not fully supported, soldier!

You will be able to look around and talk to your friends, but not join their game.". Then your internet security software is blocking it (fix here: http://www.clanbbf.com/Thread-Your-Browser-is-not-Fully-Supported-Soldier). You will know when the web-page launcher is correct as it will look quite slick.

Setting Options

Ugh! I seem to have a lot of problems re-assigning keys to mouse buttons, consequently instead of hitting RMB to melee I have to hit somewhere in the middle of the keyboard, and instead of a quick thumb click on my mouse to throw a grenade I have to look for the G key.  The Controls tab on options just doesn’t seem to accept mouse input, not for me anyway.  Hopefully, this will all be fixed in the full release – so try to ignore it for now.

Gameplay

Enough with the boring install and set-up – what’s it like?
The Beta has one map “Operation Metro” (ignore Caspian Border unless you know the password!), and Operation Metro is locked to the Rush game type. Here’s a breakdown:

+Graphics
Clean, crisp, and (so far) not overly taxing on my system. Basically just like Crysis 2 with a bit of Medal of Honour thrown in (not surprising as they are all based on the same Frostbite series of engines). Looks pretty nice!

+Sound
So far not quite the dynamic soundscape of Medal of Honour but close.

+Bugs
1. Some craters you might jump into, but then can’t jump out of.
2. You may experience some distracting flashing and flickering on the screen occasionally – even the Graphics drivers are Beta so don’t worry about it.
3. Random server disconnects occasionally.
4. You might lose the ability to aim down sight for no apparent reason, but it seems to reset itself when you die.

+Gameplay
The important bit – in a word Excellent!

Ok, so BF3 has been sold to us as a mega vehicle fest with Jet fighters streaking overhead, but Metro is Infantry only; basically it plays like a bigger, better, Call of Duty 4 – Modern Warfare. The first of 3 phases of Rush on Metro is a long range engagement over open ground, the second phase a claustrophobic close quarters battle through a subway, then the final phase a mid-range city street engagement strikingly similar to Crysis 2.  There are some sweet tweaks to gameplay – I’ll let you discover them for yourself; you will be thinking “that’s nice, I like that” a lot.

Conclusion

Download and play it!
Based upon this evidence Battlefield 3 is heading towards being the game it’s cracked up to be and I can’t wait!   I have some reservations concerning the bugs that need to be fixed with only a month before full release, but I’m confident they will be (and most probably already are) fixed.  DICE have come out first and driven a stake in the ground with this Beta, Infinity Ward and the Modern Warfare franchise have their work cut out to match it, are they saving a tactical nuke for MW3’s release? We’ll see … exciting times for gamers.

dF| Sniper Server Is Back!
by Ebola

From the makers of the original Promod Sniper Only Server, we have decided to start up our server again after getting request after request from members of the public.  Much like our old server, this one gives you two sniper rifles on spawn, not the traditional sniper/deagle combo.  It also gives you 500 rounds, not that anyone will ever last that long! And finally on close encounters you will find that pressing your knife button does absolutely nothing!

The IP for the dF| Sniper Only Server is: 109.70.148.61:28935

If you have any ideas or suggestions on how we can improve the server, just create a forum post to let us know.

Blur - Game Review
by Cuppa_Tea

I'm winning. The frenetic whirlwind of the start of the race -20 cars jostling for position, the scrape of metal and electric weapons conjuring a thick blanket of sparks and debris- is long behind me. As the last dying embers of the sun cast a golden hue over Los Angeles dockyard, a handful of drivers are gunning for victory, and the battle is no less fierce.

I'm winning, but I'm not pulling away. A dark Camaro comes rumbling up beside me, shunting me towards the edge of the dock. I hear a click, the sound of the Camaro's driver initiating a Barge. His car shakes slightly as a shock wave ripples from under his wheels, a forceful circle of unimaginable pressure. I can't avoid it. In the looming shadow of a giant freight ship, my car is sent hurtling towards the concrete precipice. I yank at the wheel, desperately trying to avoid tumbling into the abyss. My car groans, trembling. I lose the back end, but the front wheels find purchase. With an almighty shudder, the car rights itself, the back wheels kissing the stone edge.

I gun the accelerator, trying to get as far away from that dark water as I can. The Camaro has gone, thundering into the distance, and the rest of the pack is gaining. It gets worse. I curse loudly as my warning light flashes crimson, accompanied by its high-pitched wail. I look in the rear view, someone from the chasing pack has fired a Shunt. It looks like a giant football covered in molten lava and crackling energy, and it's flying towards my rear bumper.

I swerve at the last minute, losing ground but staying in one piece. The shunt sails past my wing mirror, close enough to touch. And straight into Camaro-man. There's a pause as the sphere envelopes his car, before the Camaro flips front first into the air, a red spiderweb of energy crackles over the bodywork, debris littering the road. It pirouettes towards the sky as I zoom underneath, like some kind of motoring circus act.

I'm winning. The finish line is in sight. I hit a nitro, bursting towards a ramp. I cruise into the air, I'm free, victory is mine.

Or not. Once. Twice. Three times. Three small packets of purple energy thump into my car in mid-air, each shunting me off course. My car spins 45 degrees. It's not a lot, but it's enough. I crash back down to earth, sideways. The car tips over. The world goes black. I come to a split-second later, only to see a parade of vehicles sweeping over the finish line ahead of me. I trundle over the line, battered and bruised. I've lost.

And then the whole lobby descends into rapturous laughter. Relentless mirth crackling down my plastic headset. I slump back into my sofa and smile sheepishly. “Right, let's go again shall we?”

The thing you need to understand about Blur – the latest racing game from Project Gotham Racing creators Bizarre – is that these stories happen all the time. No, really, they do. I may have added a little drama, just for fun, but the sequence of events is absolutely true.

And that's quite amazing. Creating such beautiful chaos isn't easy, especially in a racing game, but forming some kind of order out of it is even harder. In marrying the simulation sensibilities of a hard-core driving game with the ferocious combat of a kart-racer, Bizarre has done both. And in doing so, brought us the most exciting new racer in years.

The Liverpool studio certainly know their cars. And underneath Blur's scorch-marked bonnet, that Project Gotham Racing engine purrs. As Bizarre head further into 'arcade' territory it is, of course, looser and phenomenally quick, but retains a suppleness and depth that other car combat games rarely manage (or aim for).

The tracks are superbly moulded to incorporate both the combat and rich handling. A dusty Route 66 airfield plays home to wide open runways that bottleneck into crumbing shacks. Brighton promenade allows you to tear along lengthy straights by the seaside, before swinging you townwards into tricky chicanes. Barcelona is all multiple bridges and sweeping apexes.

From Tokyo to Hackney, there's excellent variety in both layout and theme. And you'll need to take this into account when choosing from the rich selection of vehicles. With simple labels from 'grippy' to 'drifty' and a smattering of chunky 'off-road' cars (which can sneak though rough and ready shortcuts), your choice is dictated by track as well as preference. Larger vehicles, like the gigantic hummer, are slower of course, but having a nippy Lotus is all well and good until you're being smashed into bits by the big boys.

And then there are the power-ups. These are the electric current that jolt Blur from slick arcade racer to the ferocious maelstrom that it is. And they will delight and frustrate in equal measure. There are eight in all, from the offensive bolt, shunt, barge, mine and shock to the more docile, but no less effective, nitro burst, shield and repair. The powerups are laid out on the track at certain points, but aren't randomised. So as long as you can direct your car to the power up you want you can pick and choose as you please. With the ability to store up three powerups in your 'bay' at any one time, there's a certain degree of tactics you can employ to get the most out of them. For instance, each offensive power up can be neutered with well timed deployment of another.

Any predictability from the powerups formation is offset by the wild scrum of the race itself, but there are a few issues with such rigid positioning. The carnage at the beginning of the race as everyone jostles for position can become something of a mess, if joyously frantic, as everyone picks up and instantly fires off shunts (homing missile) and bolts (aimed shot) in a Pavlovian reflex to picking them up.

Shock also can prove a problem. This power up drops three pockets of EMP energy at the front of the pack in order to give the leaders something to think about and thin out the pack. However, you can often come across the rather daft situation where several people fire them off at once, leading to an non-negotiable ocean of car-stopping energy.

The powerups tend not to have the same randomised, race-changing effect of Mario Kart, but clever use an tip the scales in your favour. Not that it makes it any less frustrating when your perfect race is ruined by a last-gasp shunt wrecking your car.

But you'll want to play again. Grit your teeth and settle in for the next race. Blur's greatest trick is making itself nigh impossible to put down. The online multiplayer takes direct cues from Activision stablemate Modern Warfare, with a constant drip feed of experience points leading to new events and cars. You'll finish a race and realise you're one more event away from the next level. Then, once you get there, you'll inevitably want to try out the spoils you've just received. It's not an easy cycle to break, and before you know it, a 'quick go' has turned into a mammoth session. Addiction, thy name is Blur.

This is all helped by sterling net code. In the week leading up to release, lag was rarely an issue. And even with a relatively small amount of players online, connecting to a game was wonderfully easy.

The singleplayer campaign, meanwhile, is a relentless flow of events from straight races, checkpoints, destruction modes and one-on-ones. It's tough too, with the opponent AI proving themselves more than savvy with racing lines and powerups. As with the multiplayer, that constant sense of progression is there, with the same levelling up system grabbing a tight hold on your attention. There was some concern pre-release that Blur would be throwaway outside of multiplayer. And while online competition will make up the majority of your time with the game, the singleplayer is a huge time-sink, complete with meta-games within races, such as 'fan-runs' (slalom gates appear for you to negotiate) and weapon challenges.

Perhaps best of all, Bizarre has taken the leaderboard concept from their own Geometry Wars 2 and expanded on it. Your friends' performances are always displayed after a singleplayer race, so you can see how you measure up. It's such a simple thing but it makes a huge difference. The alluring spectre of human competition is everywhere; a challenge you find hard to resist. You can even select a 'rival' from your friends list to go head to head with, race by race or send out specific challenges, daring a selection of friends to challenge your time.

Every inch of Blur feels like it's crafted with the player in mind, offering them a huge, slick and exciting racing package. While it can frustrate, with the balance of powerups occasionally off-kilter, it only serves to push you onto the next race, to undo the injustice, to mete out your revenge. Outside of that, with your focus on the race, everything else can just become, well, just a blur.

i43 Team All Set!
by Ebola

With i43 moving to the new venue of Telford, dF| have a team ready to do battle once more in the Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare competition. Hopefully the venue will sell out which should see 3,000 geeks, er sorry I mean gamers descend on the poor old Telford Centre for the last weekend in August. So are we going to train like madmen up until then?  Your having a laugh!  We are going there for fun, and if we manage to fluke some wins then so be it.

So who is in this team that dF| have handpicked to take on Europe’s best?  In no particular order:

Edlass: Together with Shinobi, these two AKers are the Kings of TS.
Shinobi: See above.
Ebs: Only in the team by default as we only have 5 players going!
Minty: Yes you read right, Minty.  Yes, yes we know he hates the game but like any decent smack head he just can't help having one more little go.
Red: The young hippie who is hoping to be our sniper (Minty might stand in his way).

So don't be surprised if by the end of August you'll see our names plastered all over Tek-9!  Hopefully in a good way though....

Ok, let’s Ready Up!

Match Training Returns!
by Ebola

Starting at 8pm Monday 6th June, we will be running a training session every week setup just for matche practise.  In this session we will be going some tactics, nade spots and basically general teamwork.  During the one hour session there will be no matches, but the floor will be open to anyone that has an idea/comment etc. After the session we will be looking at getting at least one match in to see if the last hour had been worth it! lol

Brink - Is it any good?
by Cuppa_Tea

Let me start by saying this FPS is different to all others. If had to say what is resembles I would say a healthy orgy of Battlefield class types and teamwork, Team Fortress 2 cartoonish graphics and objective based play and some All Points Bulletin character customization.

Now something I wasn't aware of is that the single player is just an offline bot filled version of the multiplayer....or the multiplayer is a online version of the single player...whatever.... So basically you play standard matches if your choosing solo or not, each map is set a series of objectives, normally 'blow up this door' 'escort this person' or 'repair controls' and the other team are out to 'defend door' 'kill person' 'defend controls'. Fairly standard stuff. You can be 1 of 4 classes, Soldier, Engineer, Medic and Operative. The soldier has the ammo refill, explosive charges to plant and Molotov's. The Engineer can place turret, disarm explosives and hack boxes and can 'buff' team mates weapons. The medic can heal others and revive fallen team mates. And the Operative has disguises and hacking tools. Again fairly standard class based shooter stuff.

The idea behind the game play really is teamwork, if you don't work together then you really won't get past the 1st objective. The tactical choices in game are quite large, if you are having trouble getting to the controls you need to hack for example there are often secondary objectives that allow access via another route, but if your defending you can reblock it causing bottlenecks. You can jump between classes by returning to the spawn or running back to 'control points' think of these as mini bases where you can re arm etc.

The customisation the game offers is quite fun, you can have 3 different body types, large medium and small, they offer health and speed in opposite amounts, i.e. the large moves slow but has huge health. You can apply this body and be any class. So the medic can be a large bodied powerhouse that wades into battle to revive people, or a skinny small body that hops over walls and slides under fire to revive his mate.

The games big pitch is the SMART function, which is basically parkour in game! Sounds cool.....actually isn't much. If you hold down sprint then you can run up and grab a ledge, or slide under a fence. It does keep you moving and also you can fire whilst climbing/jumping so a benefit is......no auto climb excuses! SMART takes a while to get used to but is fun once used properly.

Choosing your side to fight on, either security (they are trying to save the city) or resistance (who are trying to destroy the city) really isn't a hard choice as you can change your character between the two at will without having to start from scratch. Which is cool, but you loose all feel of having a 'side' its just attack or defence really.

My overall opinion...... It a bit of a laugh. With friends its even better. However, it will never be competitive, it will die out pretty soon, and has its flaws. The amount of levels/ options for playing them are small so will be repetitive fairly quick. The £25 price tag really is hard to justify. But all in all its worth a bash......if you can find it in the bargain bin of Game.

dF| Interviewed By Tek-9
by Ebola

i42 was a busy time for dF|, not only did we have our first ever live stream, we were also interviewed by Tek-9.  Before you spit your coffee out everywhere, Tek-9 try to cover not only the pro side of CoD4 but also the community base.  pTR interviewed the whole clan at the event so the answers are diverse as possible and I think show a true reflection of how our members feel about Call of Duty 4 and the next step for dF|.

dF|'s First Live Stream
by Ebola

As most of you know, dF| again attended another Lan, this time i42 at Newbury Race Course over the Easter Bank Holiday weekend.  Our one aim was to try and qualify out of the group stages.  We were on course for this until a 11-13 defeat on Saturday morning put pay to that.  We then had one final game and it was to be our first ever live stream!

We played on Crash and to be honest, we were all disappointed with our performance.  Fair do's to Extreme Measures, they deserved the win, but each of us that played knew we could have played better.

If you would like to view the stream, please click here:  dF|'s First Live Stream

Call of Duty: Black Ops
by Ebola
Yes thats right, after Infinity Ward managed to basically shove two fingers up to the PC community, Treyarch have decided to bring back dedicated server files!  So no more host migration failures and connecting to some runts Pentium 1 in East Prussia, you can now play on stable fast servers hosted in proper data centres.

Here at dF|, we have two servers already pre-ordered through the only Gaming Service Provider allowed to host Black Ops, Gameservers.com. Our servers will be going live the minute the game is released. Over the next few days we will be running a poll on what game type our two servers should be running. This poll is open to all dF| members plus the public.
